 CBD flower for all

The earliest evidence of hemp dates back to 10,000 B.C., when hemp was used by the Chinese for rope, sails, food, clothing and building materials.  Hundreds of years later, hemp made its way to America when colonists were required by the British government to cultivate the plant for rope and sails.  Our founding fathers like George Washington grew hemp; Benjamin Franklin utilized hemp paper for his printing plant.  Believe it or not, the Declaration of Independence and first flag was made of hemp.  By 1943, over 350,000 acres of hemp were growing across the country as the federal government encouraged farmers to grow it because World War II had interrupted the flow of industrial fibers.  By 1970, cannabis became Public Enemy #1 with the passage of the controlled substances act that made cultivation illegal.  Hemp was largely forgotten about and most production shifted to other countries.  It wasn’t until 2014 that hemp got a boost with the “Farm Bill,” that allowed state agriculture departments and educational institutions the opportunity to grow hemp.  Pilot programs were launched shortly after with many more states opening up their eyes to the potential of growing hemp, especially cbd flower for extraction.  Currently over 35 states have legalized hemp production, with over half allowing for the cultivation of cbd flower.

Can CBD Help With PTSD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is being increasingly recognized as a modern miracle substance for its various uses and applications. One of the more recent uses of CBD has been in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Before going into how CBD can help PTSD, one must first understand what the disorder is. PTSD is term many are familiar with, but it is still not entirely understood. Most people relate PTSD to veterans or first responders, but in fact, it includes many more people and scenarios.

What is PTSD?

Anyone who has experienced emotional trauma, ranging from motor vehicle accidents to abuse and much more, can be affected by PTSD. The disorder stems from trauma, and even if that trauma has long passed, a person suffering from PTSD can still re-experience that trauma for years to come. Some of the disorder’s symptoms include:

  • Detachment
  • Emotionally numb
  • Exaggerated startle
  • Inability to control emotions
  • Sadness or anger
  • Recurring nightmares
  • Inability to sleep
  • Hypervigilance
  • Substance abuse

When someone with PTSD experiences a situation similar to the traumatic experience they suffered from, the portions of their brains that control fear is triggered, causing their PTSD to flare. Fireworks, speeding cars, and many other things can make this occur.

Fears and reactions can be so overwhelming that functioning in normal daily activities can seem impossible and can result in a negative impact on a person’s physical and mental health. This in escapable sensation is what causes some patients to result to suicide. In some cases, it is because conventional treatments known to them did not work. PTSD can happen to any gender, race, or age, after someone experiences or even witnesses a traumatic event. It is estimated that 10 percent of the population suffers from the disorder.

Today, there are many treatments for the disorder, and as previously mentioned, CBD is gaining popularity in that field. Like PTSD, cannabis is another term people today are hearing about more often.

How CBD can treat PTSD

Some patients feel as though CBD helped significantly in reducing the agonizing symptoms. Although official studies have been difficult to come by because of the endless red tape and bureaucracy, there have been other studies have been promising though, with military personnel claiming relief with the use of cannabis oil when other treatments have failed. CBD has also been tested on lab mice and has been shown to block the fear producing portions through its delivery in the endocannabinoid system.
